How the RRIF minimum works
Starting the year after you set up a RRIF, the carrier must pay you a yearly minimum. There is no minimum in the year it is opened. You can withdraw more. You cannot withdraw less.
The minimum is the fair market value on January 1 multiplied by a prescribed factor. The factor uses your age in whole years on January 1. If you elected your spouse's or common-law partner's age when the RRIF was set up, before payments started, the carrier uses that age instead.
For age 70 or younger, the factor is 1 divided by (90 minus the age). From 71 on, this page uses the CRA column called "All other RRIFs".
Example from a CRA page about the current factors: age 71 and a RRIF worth $100,000 on January 1. 5.28% of that is a $5,280 minimum.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RRIF minimum at age 71?
For all other RRIFs, the CRA factor at age 71 is 5.28% of the value on January 1. On $100,000, the minimum is $5,280.
How is the RRIF minimum calculated?
Multiply the fair market value at the start of the year by the prescribed factor for the age on January 1. If you elected your spouse's or common-law partner's age when the RRIF was set up, the carrier uses that age.
Is there a minimum in the year I open the RRIF?
No. The minimum starts the year after the RRIF is set up.
Can I take more than the minimum?
Yes. You cannot take less. Amounts paid out of a RRIF are taxable. This page does not estimate the tax.
What if my RRIF was set up before 1993?
It may be a qualifying RRIF. At age 71 the CRA chart shows 5.26% instead of 5.28%. From age 72, the qualifying column matches the all other column. A pre-March 1986 RRIF uses another column. This calculator uses the all other column.
What this calculator leaves out
It does not estimate income tax or the tax withheld on amounts above the minimum. It does not cover a qualifying RRIF, a pre-March 1986 RRIF, or a trusteed RRIF that holds an annuity contract. Those use other CRA calculations. Your carrier's statement is the amount that counts.
